New online engine maintenance management service BOOST enters into service

Turbomeca is pleased to announce the entry into service of BOOST, its new online engine maintenance management service. BOOST (Bank Of Online Services & Technologies) is a highly secured, web-based application developed in association with IBM. With BOOST, Turbomeca-powered helicopter operators will access real-time, personalized engine data to enrich their own fleet maintenance management, with the direct support of Turbomeca teams, 24/7.

BOOST is being deployed among several customers like Heli-Union, HeliDax, Helicopters Italia and Advanced Helicopter Services, and contributes to the airworthiness and availability requirements of their helicopter fleet. Bristow Helicopters Ltd will also join the program this year. A major milestone will be achieved in June 2016 when a first customer will go 100% paperless and fully manage their engines through BOOST solely with the e-engine logbook.

BOOST adds considerable value to the customers with the full integration of three key features:

- The Electronic Technical Publications
- The Electronic Configuration Manager.

Turbomeca to offer S-76C+ engine upgrade program

Turbomeca (Safran) will introduce an engine retrofit program to enable Arriel 2S1powered S-76C+ operators to upgrade to the Arriel 2S2 S-76C++ model. This engine upgrade will be conducted alongside an airframe retrofit program provided by Sikorsky Aircraft, a Lockheed Martin company.

Upgrading to S-76C++ configuration with Arriel 2S2 engines will deliver improved mission capabilities including greater take-off and cruising power, reduced pilot workload and higher payload.

Certified in 2005, the Arriel 2S2 is eight per cent more powerful than the Arriel 2S1. The engine delivers take-off power at 923 shp, cruise power of 832 shp and a maximum One Engine Inoperative (OEI) rating of 1033 shp. The 2S2 also features a dual-channel FADEC Arriel 2S2 meets the highest market standards in terms of reliability and robustness, with a TBO that has been extended to 3,850 hours.

Turbomeca Vice-President Support and Services Franck Saudo commented, "This upgrade program is a great opportunity to offer our customers greater performance and added value with the Arriel 2S2 which is an already proven high-performance engine on the S76".

The engine retrofit upgrade will be available for order in the second quarter of 2016.

Around 12,000 Arriel units have been produced, of which 700 are Arriel 2S1 and 2S2, together logging 45 million flight hours. Ranging from 650 to 1000 shp, the Arriel engine family powers over 40 different helicopter types.

Turbomeca Arrius to power new DRF Luftrettung H135 fleet

DRF Luftrettung has selected Turbomeca's (Safran) Arrius 2B2Plus engine to power its three new Airbus Helicopters H135. With these new Turbomeca-powered H135 fleet DRF Luftrettung will perform HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) missions in Germany.

Franck Saudo, Turbomeca EVP Support & Services, said: "This is a further step that strengthens our relationship with DRF Luftrettung, and we are proud to be part of this continuing effort to provide medical assistance to the German people. Ka-62 completes takeoff with Ardiden 3G

Safran is celebrating the takeoff of the Ardiden 3G engine aboard civil Russian Helicopters Ka-62. The maiden hovering took place on 28 April 2016 at manufacturer plant in Arsenyev.

"This takeoff marks a major milestone in the Ardiden 3 development program. It is already demonstrating great maturity. We are delighted with the fast-paced progress of our strong partnership with Russian Helicopters towards Ka-62 helicopter entry into service. This is a significant step in the deployment of competitive new-generation helicopters issued by Russian Helicopters" commented Turbomeca (Safran) Executive Vice President OEM Sales, Maxime Faribault.

"This is a very significant event for the Russian Helicopters holding company and a due result of our work", said the holding company's CEO Alexander Mikheev.

Since its first ground run in April 2013, extensive engines testing demonstrated the 3G's performance at Bordes (France). All development and performance tests were completed, and the engine will obtain type-certification in 2016. The Ardiden 3G has already demonstrated 20 percent class fuel consumption improvement over engines operating in the same power range.

Safran selected as engine supplier for South-Korean LCH and LAH helicopters

Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) has selected Safran Helicopter Engines as engine supplier for its Light Civil Helicopter (LCH). It will be powered with the existing Arriel 2C2 engine. On the Light Armed Helicopter (LAH), Safran has been selected by Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), KAI and Hanwha Techwin. The LAH will feature a new engine designated Arriel 2L2.

Safran Helicopter Engines and Hanwha Techwin have signed an agreement for the joint-development and the manufacturing of the Arriel 2L2 in South-Korea. This new engine is the latest member of the Arriel family. Hanwha Techwin will perform license-production of the engine: it will manufacture major parts and will perform the final assembly and tests in its plant in Changwon before delivery to KAI. Hanwha Techwin will also be responsible of the MRO of the Arriel 2L2 for the LAH.

Safran selected to power new UK’s training rotorcraft

The Arrius 2B2 powers the twin-engine light 8-seater Airbus Helicopters H135. It is used for a wide variety of missions, including EMS, VIP transport and police work.

Safran has been selected to supply engines for the training aircraft selected for Rotary Wing training under the UK's Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS) programme. Safran Helicopter Engines will provide Arrius 2B2Plus and Arriel 2E turbines for the fleet of Airbus Helicopters H135 and H145.

Safran maintains its position of preferred engine manufacturer for helicopter training operations. Bruno Even, Safran Helicopter Engines CEO, said "UK military pilots have trained using our engines aboard Gazelle and Squirrel rotorcraft for 40 years. We are glad they will keep using Safran engines in their future H135 and H145 training operations".

Safran and HAL to form JV in India to support Indian helicopter operators

Safran Helicopter Engines and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) have agreed to establish, in India, a support centre for national and international rotorcraft customers. The joint venture will be opened in the coming months.

This new centre will provide maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) services for Safran TM333 and HAL Shakti engines installed on HAL-built helicopters. This scope would be enlarged to include other engines which both partners may further agree. Safran Helicopter Engines and HAL will provide their customers with a first-class service including optimized engine availability.

With a fleet of over 1,000 engines, including 250 TM333 and 250 Shakti, India's armed forces are one of the largest operators of Safran-designed helicopter engines. Shakti is the Indian designation for the Safran Ardiden 1H1, co-developed with HAL and produced under license.

Safran signs contract to support Danish EH101 engines

Safran Helicopter Engines has signed a seven-year contract with Denmark’s Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO), to support 14 RTM 322-powered EH101 Merlin operated by the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF). Over 50 engines will now be covered by Safran’s Global Support Package (GSP

This agreement satisfies the RDAF requirement for optimum availability of engines during their search and rescue and military operations, both at home or while on deployment.

The GSP optimizes turboshaft availability and enables military operators to focus on their core activities. It guarantees availability at a fixed price per engine flying hour, a close technical partnership with the OEM and provides the customer with full budget control during the contract period. Through this support partnership, a team of Safran Helicopter Engines specialists will be dedicated to maximizing availability of the RDAF's RTM322.

Commander Kim Bo Meier, Director of Helicopters at DALO, said: "DALO looks forward to this agreement that will ensure sufficient engines to support the operational tasks in the period. The GSP agreement is based on good partnership between the parties."

Franck Saudo, Safran Helicopter Engines Executive Vice President Support & Services, said: "This contract marks a major new milestone in our partnership with DALO and the RDAF. During Singapore Airshow, Turbomeca announced its agreement with Indonesia's PT Travira Air for a Customer Support agreement extending a "Support By The Hour" (SBH®) contract for five more years.

The €5.7 million ($9.5 million) contract covers a total of 20 engines (Arriel 1D1, 2S1, 2S2 and 1S1), including spares, fitted to seven Sikorsky S76 and one Airbus Helicopters AS350B2 aircraft.

Through this agreement Turbomeca's reaffirms its commitment to supporting PT Travira Air's fast-growing off-shore operations, from bases in Jakarta (Indonesia) and Kota Bahru (Malaysia).

During the Singapore Airshow, Turbomeca announced the achievement of a major milestone for both Turbomeca Asia Pacific (Singapore) and Heligo Charters Pvt Mumbai, India Ltd who have signed a new "Support By The Hour" (SBH®) contract to cover the Arriel 2C engines fitted on its fleet of two Dauphin AS 365N3 helicopters.

Mr. Aurelien Blanc, CEO of Turbomeca Asia Pacific, said, "The five-year SBH® contract is formulated to provide seamless support to Heligo Charter's operation serving a British Gas project in Mumbai. The agreement marks Turbomeca's first such contract with an offshore operator in India."

At Heli-Expo, Turbomeca (Safran) will display its principal product lines: Arriel, Arrano, Ardiden 3 and RTM 322. The line-up is completed by the latest Arrius 2R, selected by Bell Helicopter to power its new SLS (Short Light Single) helicopter.

The Arrius 2R is the latest member of a 3,000-strong engine family. This new engine version delivers performance and power within the 450-550 shp class, while improving safety and lowering pilot workload via a Full Authority Dual-channel Engine Control (FADEC). The twin-module engine configuration is designed to reduce fuel consumption and lower the cost of operation.

The Arriel passes a major milestone at Heli-Expo: 40 million flight hours achieved with over 1,300 customers in 110 countries. The Arriel family, delivering take-off power ranging from 700 to 950 shp, powers 40 different helicopter variants.

The Arrano is a new 1,100 shp engine designed for four to six-ton helicopters. This first variant, the Arrano 1A, will power the Airbus Helicopters X4 — a new-generation, five to six-ton helicopter. The first test run of the Arrano will take place any day now.

The Ardiden is designed to provide 1,400 to 2,000 shp, for helicopters in the five to eight-ton class. The Ardiden 1's first application is the Hindustan Aeronautics Dhruv while the Ardiden 3 power the Kamov Ka-62 and AVICopter AC352.

Aurélien Blanc appointed as Managing Director of Turbomeca Asia Pacific

On February 1st 2014, Aurelien Blanc, previously head of Turbomeca Asia Pacific (TAP) Front Office, took over as the company's Managing Director.

In 2009, Aurélien Blanc (37), a business graduate from INSEAD, joined TAP having spent several years at Airbus Helicopters as Commercial Director for South-East Asia.

He is now in charge of executive management for TAP which supports 170 customers in Korea, Taiwan, South-East Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Turbomeca celebrates 25-years partnership with the Brazilian air taxi company Helisul, a reference in the Brazilian aviation market.

Founded in 1972, Helisul Air Taxi sets nowadays as the largest air taxi company in Brazil and one of the largest in the world. Featuring a fleet of about 50 aircraft, 60 % of them equipped with Turbomeca engines, Helisul has been expanding its activities in different market sectors. Present in 10 bases scattered in Brazil, with approximately 260 employees, Helisul operates in sectors like Air Taxi,aircraft maintenance and emergency medical support, to different sectors of industry and government as police, petroleum, electric power, telecommunications, among others.

By obtaining the ISO 14001 certificate Helisul became the first airline company in Brazil to have such qualification. Turbomeca introduces Makila 2B engine for latest EC225e

Turbomeca has designed a new Makila variant to offer increased performance to the newest Airbus Helicopters EC225e. The new combustion chamber and high-power turbine blades will permit take-off a significant increase of MTOW in CAT A conditions.

Reducing maintenance costs, other Makila 2B improvements provide an increased TBO of 4,000 hours.

Executive VP Programmes Cyril Poetsch confirms: "The Makila 2B retains the familiar architecture, design and maintenance concept of its popular 2A1 predecessor and retrofit customers will require no specific training or tools to enable them to quickly return their helicopters to operational status."

First test bench runs of the Makila 2B are ongoing and certification is planned for end 2015. Over 2,200 Makila engines provide safe and reliable power in challenging environments around the world. Together they have accumulated over ten million flight hours.

Turbomeca rewards executives from three customers from Nepal. On behalf of the Airlines Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN), Turbomeca CEO Olivier Andriès will present trophies to Mr. Sudhir Mittal, Chairman Shree Airlines; Capt Dawa Sherpa, Chairman Mountain Helicopters and Capt Rameswar Thapa, Chairman of Simrik Air.

Shree Airlines recently took delivery of an AS 350B3e fitted with an Arriel 2D gas turbine. The growing airlines has signed with Airbus Helicopters for a further six AS350B3e and three EC130T2 and offers services including heli-skiing, business charter, SAR and Medevac.

Mountain Helicopters operates three A-Stars with Arriel engines and Simrik Air has two B3e models, both with Arriels. The engines are under Support By the Hour SBH® contracts and one of those has an application pending.

Maverick Helicopters receives Turbomeca’s 500th Arriel 2D Engine

Turbomeca awarded Maverick Helicopters owner, Greg Rochna who took receipt of the 500th Turbomeca Arriel 2D production engine. Olivier Andriès, CEO of Turbomeca, offered him an Arriel 2D scale model to commemorate this important milestone.

The Arriel 2D is part of the Arriel 2+ family and delivers low cost, reliability and performance. The engine has collectively accumulated over 300,000 flight hours on the AS350B3e and EC130T2 helicopters.

In 1995, Greg Rochna started Maverick Helicopters with a single helicopter that was powered by a Turbomeca Arriel engine. Since then, Turbomeca and Maverick Helicopters have forged a business partnership that has resulted in the addition of the Arriel 2D engine into the growing Maverick fleet. Today, their fleet is composed of 39 helicopters all powered by Turbomeca.

Turbomeca announced the achievement of a major milestone in the BOOST project (BOOST – Bank of Online Services & Technologies): the delivery of the first version of the IBM application.

BOOST is Turbomeca's future range of advanced engine and maintenance management services. With this unique, highly secure web-based application, customers will be able to electronically share data with Turbomeca, smooth and facilitate operations and airworthiness tasks as well as limit human factors through its specific online features.

At this year's show, Turbomeca will present this innovative application to customers during live demonstrations: discover the electronic engine logbook, the integrated links with the web-IETP and its time-saving features for managing engine configuration and scheduling maintenance.

The next major step in the BOOST project is the test phase. Turbomeca already signed Collaboration Agreements with 6 customers in 2013 and is expecting new other customers including Ecocopter (Chili) and Helisul Taxi Aereo (Brazil), to the group of testers. The first round of tests have already started within Turbomeca and the application will be later tested by the first customers this summer.
